Late 50s - early 60s pair of earrings, entitled Sling. Created in 1958 by Tone Vigeland and made by Plus (Norway), the ear cuffs are Vigeland's most famous earrings. The tapered hoops are designed to wear around the ear without findings. The thin section sits behind the ear and the wider portion sits at the ear lobe.
Marked: ND (conjoined for Norway Designs), T within V, and the [+] maker's mark, then Sterling 925S Norway. In excellent vintage condition.
Ranking among the top international artists in jewelry making, Tone Vigeland (b 1938, Oslo) began an apprenticeship with the jewelry workshop Plus in 1959. There she rose to journeyman, then master smith before opening her own workshop in 1961. Her relationship with Plus continued through the 60s. Vigeland's international breakthrough came in 1981 at the London gallery Electrum exhibition. This was followed by exhibitions in New York, Tokyo and other major cities. In 1997 a retrospective organized by Oslo Museum was shown at the Cooper Hewitt. Tone Vigeland's work is in the collections of museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art.
