Rare pair of early 1950s stoneware lamps by American ceramicist, Paul Bellardo. Matte glaze with mottled brown and green background, and strong abstract designs that encompass the lamps. In excellent condition.
Born in Connecticut in 1924, Paul Bellardo studied at Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts under the G.I. Bill. After graduation he continued as the school's ceramic instructor for the next ten years, and was the first ceramicist to receive the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Scholarship for study abroad. Returning from Europe, he opened a studio/gallery in New York’s Greenwich Village, then relocated to a larger space on Christopher Street where he produced ceramics and sculpture for the next 28 years.
Bellardo's first one man show was at the DeCordova Museum in 1954. Other exhibitions include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance. His work is in the permanent collections of the Chrysler Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
